And Then There Came Adam!
The
response was fantastic! The audiences were captivated! New York had its
first glimpse of ““Adam: The Life And Times Of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.”
, on Sunday and
they love it! First there was an appearance of our Artistic Director and Star of
Adam,
Reed
McCants, on
Kiss FM Radio, the very popular Sunday morning talk show hosted by Bob Slade.
But also on the show was Adam Clayton Powell IV. The entire show was
dedicated to Adam. But when Reed was asked to do excerpts from the play, the
phone lines were ringing off the hook. Folks couldn’t believe their ears. His
phrasing, his articulation and the power of Adam was precisely duplicated as
Reed’s performed three heart wrenching speeches. But that was only the
beginning, because if you were lucky enough to see either the 3:00 PM or 5:00 PM
show later that afternoon, then you know how truly captivating Reed’s
Performance was. Checkout what people had to say about “
Adam”, The Life and
Times, on our “Audience Talks” Page.
I spoke to Reed and asked him how it felt to portray one of America's greatest
heroes and he said, "It was exhilarating and exhausting. I had done an
impersonation of Malcolm X a few years back in the early 80's and at that time,
X wasn't as popular as he was about to become. I used to walk around with
a crew cut when everybody had a Jeri-Curl. People used to wonder if I'd
just gotten released from prison. It's funny how things work out because
about 8 years later the Jeri-Curl was on it's way out and the crew cut was back
in. But the main thing was, I was able to be apart of a campaign to keep
the legacy of Malcolm X alive. With Adam, I hoped the same thing would
happen. After the performances on Sunday, we have been receiving many
invitations to perform this show at schools, colleges and churches. We're
sifting through the offers now, but this is certainly a more enthusiastic
response than I ever imagined. But in the end, if I can play just a small
part in continuing Adam's recognition than I have done great." If you're
in the New York listening area and you want to hear for yourself, be sure to
have your radio turned to 1600 WWRL on Thursday morning. Reed has been
invited to speak about his portrayal on the morning show at approximately 7:35
AM.
